Auntie Hayley’s Healthy Crumble

I’ve been meaning to post this recipe for a LONG time, but I have been dealing with digital eye strain for the last year and a half,  and I have had to minimize my computer time outside of work.

However, I recently made this recipe for my family on visit to them and my niece loved it so much I thought it was time I posted it. It was so lovely to see how much she enjoyed it, and so I thought I’d name it with her in mind.

Crumbles/crisps are a popular dessert, especially for the holidays, but usually they are made with highly processed ingredients such as sugar and oil, and sometimes white flour. It so easy to make a delicious, healthy alternative, so there’s really no excuse not to!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • 1/2 cup medjool dates
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (or more to taste)
  • 4 cups of stewed fruit of choice

(Amounts can be adjusted depending on how much crumble you like with your fruit.)

Directions:

  • Lightly stew the fruit of your choice on the stovetop. Apples work well and it’s nice to add a bit of cinnamon.
  • Add the walnuts and dates to a food processor and process until they are crumbly in texture.
  • Add 3/4 of the oats and process into the walnut/date mix.
  • Add the other 1/4 of the oats and lightly process so that some are still whole.
  • Place the warm, stewed fruit into bowls, add the crumble to the top and serve.

This pairs really well with some banana ice cream!
